5 Tips for Visiting Florida

Preparing for Your Florida Vacation

#1 Best Time to Visit

Florida is world-renowned for its sunny days and balmy weather. Even in the winter, most of Florida enjoys a mild climate. The major Florida attractions can be visited all year long. However, if you are looking for the best time to visit, it really depends on personal preference. Florida summers are known to get hot and muggy. We are pretty used to this, but visitors from out-of-state may find it uncomfortable. Although, the summers are great time to enjoy the beautiful Florida waters. If you want to enjoy more mild weather, consider visiting between October – December. Florida provides LOTS of exciting holiday events and activities. March – May is also a great time for great weather and is filled with Festivals of all kinds. You will have great weather without the crowds of tourists. Hurricane season is from June – November, but the height of the season is from mid-September to October. We love Dennis Phillips who most would consider to be Florida’s #1 meteorologist serving up the most accurate and fluff free report. If you’re ever worried about what the weather will be like when planning your trip, he’s the man to follow for updates on all things weather related!

#2 How to Get There

Florida has several major airports including Miami Airport (MIA), Orlando Airport (MCO), Jacksonville Airport (JAX), and Tampa Airport (TPA). These are all international airports and have direct flights across the US. St. Pete/Clearwater (PIE) is a smaller airport for non-stop affordable airlines like Allegiant Air for both those in the US and Canada. If you plan to drive to the airport, you should plan your airport parking in advance. For example, for JAX Airport parking, there are several secure parking lots that are much less expensive than the on-site parking garages, which is great for long term parking. If you would rather drive, Florida has almost 500 miles of toll roads that make the major destinations easily accessible. Consider getting a SunPass to automatically pay the tolls at a lower rate rather than worry about being billed or waiting in line at those toll booths.

#3 Choosing a Destination

Florida has many highly rated destinations that draw millions of visitors each year. If you are looking for a beautiful beach destination, then the Tampa Bay area is perfect. The surrounding beaches like St. Petersburg and Clearwater have beautiful white sand and gentle surf. There are also lots of fun things to experience like the Tampa Riverwalk, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Armature Works and Amalie Arena. If you want another family-friendly destination, consider the St. Augustine/Jacksonville area. You can expect pristine beaches, plenty of natural state parks, and fascinating Florida history. You may also attend the nail biting football games at TIAA Bank Field and walk along the waterside on the Jacksonville Riverwalk. #4 What to Pack

Regardless of the time of year you plan to visit, you will want to make a trip to Wal-Mart or Target for sunscreen, sunglasses, and a swimsuit with you. Florida is prone to afternoon showers throughout most of the year, so having an umbrella or light rain jacket would be nice, as well. Florida weather is usually warm and sunny, but be sure to check the weather before your trip. Most of the year, people are wearing shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops. During the winter, dressing in layers is best because the afternoons still get quite warm although the mornings start out with a chill and the nights grow cooler.

#5 Where to Stay

There is a wide variety of places to stay in Florida. You have many options to choose from depending on your preferences and budget. Luxury resorts are common throughout the major tourist destinations. Although they can be expensive, the resorts provide many fantastic amenities. You can also opt for local bed and breakfasts, quaint cabins, or a fun campground. AirBnb is a popular source or you can check out Florida VRBO if you want a nice vacation home for the whole family.
